X MAN-RODEO

Hugues Reip

… « In Hugues Reip’s X-Man Rodeo, The story goes as follows. The artist traverses the wall with his camera. The walls beyond are destroyed, as in an act of destroying the white cube. The destruction produces what looks like caves, drawn on the wall. Caves, light, deception and projection inevitably recall Plato’s allegory of the cave, so central to the western tradition of visual art.
The mobile camera personified. The wall moves, and so does the hole. When two holes follow each other they appear to pursue, to persecute, one another. A small one becomes large, a second small one emerges and runs after the first »… « The repetition of the destruction undermines the destruction, for there is always a wholeness to be destroyed. With all the lightness and, compare to the cave, short-lived glory of the white cube, it tends to resurrect. A sound tape of the action accompanies the images. Together they move from figuration to abstraction, a development carried out by means of scale. Large becomes abstract. Events become rhythmic repetitions, like a visual poetry hammers rather than articulates meaning. The viewer’s body, then, is measuring stick, but unable to hold the image in it’s scale. The process recorded and produced is a comment on the exhibition itself, as a voyage through space and time that are indistinguishable. The viewer’s work is to perform the dizzying, perhaps even nauseating repetition of destruction. »
